Since it had already been decided that the ending of the Two Towers novel (Frodo's encounter with Shelob) would be moved over to the third movie, this meant that Frodo's storyline in the second film lacked a climax. As such, he makes no attempt to take it from Frodo, and puts them safely on their path to Mordor. He quickly realizes the nature of the mission that Frodo has undertaken, and acknowledges the dangers of the One Ring. Aragorn is a direct descendant of Isildur, one of the original Dunedain, and his successor kings of Arnor.Īlthough Frodo and Sam also encounter captain Faramir in the books, their meeting is much more congenial, as Faramir has foreseen Frodo's coming in a dream. Although Gondor remained, Arnor eventually collapsed from internal conflicts and external attacks from the Witch-king of Angmar, the leader of the Nazgûl/Ringwraiths. The faction that had remained loyal to the Elves, the Dunedain, was allowed to survive and settle on Middle-earth, where they founded Arnor (the Northern Kingdom) and Gondor (the Southern Kingdom). The Valar (god-like beings) then punished these Númenoreans by crushing their fleet and drowning the island of Númenor in the ocean. Over time, the Númenoreans became very wealthy and powerful, and one of their factions started to wage war against the Elves because they desired their immortality. In Middle-earth history, Númenor was an island kingdom given to the surviving humans of a great war on Middle-earth millennia ago, together with a longer lifespan than normal Men. He also adds that he's one of the last of his people, as the Northern Kingdom was destroyed long ago. He confirms with Eowyn that he is 87 years old, and one of the Dunedain, a descendant of Númenor and blessed with long life. A scene was cut from the theatrical version of the film, and later reinstated for the Extended Edition DVD, that revealed a little more about Aragorn. ![]()
